The National Archives

Posted by in Aerial Collections, Education & Outreach, Events, General Collections

We recently had a great opportunity to spend the majority of a week at The National Archives in Kew, alongside the trainees who are undertaking placements as part of the ‘Opening up Archives’ programme. TNA staff organised and hosted a programme of workshops through which we were given an insight into how their services and strategies work. Our Education and Outreach trainees (Bryony, Tania and Elaine) stayed for three days and the Curatorial trainees (Nora, Dave, Craig and myself) stayed for four. We really enjoyed the week, and it was…read more

A Night in the Museum

Posted by in Education & Outreach, Events

On Friday night a group of us headed to the first “Museum Lates” at the National Museum of Scotland. It was a great chance to see the museum, many of us hadn’t been since the re-opening, and there was some brilliant entertainment too. DJ’s and bands played throughout the night and we stood and listened with drinks bought from the bar before joining in with the extra entertainment on offer. As I wandered around the exhibitions I found a group of people lounging on cushions making friendship bracelets and there was…read more

Digital Futures

Between all the cataloguing, project management, and essay writing for the University of Dundee, a few of the trainees and I attended “Insights and Ideas: Social Media” last Thursday. This Creative Scotland event highlighted some really interesting points on the potential of social media in cultural institutions as technology is progressing at such a fast rate. Thought-provoking art installations, such as the End of Forgetting, helped to demonstrate how many questions can be raised by something as complex as the internet. Guest speaker Jim Richardson of Museum Next also brought our…read more

Doors Open Day

Posted by in Education & Outreach, Events

Visit RCAHMS on Doors Open Day to find out more about sport and leisure in Scotland through the ages… It’s the time of year when hundreds of fascinating buildings across Scotland open their doors and invite the public in for free. On 24th September, the RCAHMS archive in Edinburgh is offering behind the scenes tours and expert talks about sport and leisure collections. From Victorian and Edwardian photographs of golf and tennis, and original architects’ drawings of swimming pools and ice rinks, to aerial photographs of sporting venues across Scotland and Europe, a wealth of material…read more

Behind the scenes at the Devil’s Elbow

Posted by in Aerial Collections, Events

It’s high time we showed you this little video, charting the course of our event in the cavernous  Devil’s Elbow education space at Edinburgh Castle – from an empty room to…well…I’ll leave you to wait and see! Check back again soon for an update about our work here in NCAP – we’ve been very busy so have lots of (well we think so at least) exciting things to post. Kate

Skills to present lunchtime lecture

Posted by in Education & Outreach, Events

Hi! This is my first blog post as part of the Skills team. After a nice and relaxing summer holiday, it’s been back to my Education work programme creating galleries for the RCAHMS website. This has allowed me to look at some of the fascinating images held on the Canmore database. On Monday 22nd August, the Skills trainees are going to be delivering a lunchtime lecture at RCAHMS about the work we have been doing and the Edinburgh Castle Networking event from last month. These lectures are open to anyone…read more

The week after the week before…

Posted by in Education & Outreach, Events

This week we have all gone back to our normal work programmes and it all seems very calm compared to last week when we had the networking event. For myself, as part of the Education and Outreach team this week has mainly been spent working on news stories, which will appear on the RCAHMS website soon. We haven’t really said much here about it since but the event went very well. We all really enjoyed it despite the nerves and our guests were lovely. Our presentations were so popular we have…read more

Nearly time for our networking event

I’m looking forward to seeing the team from the National Trust for Scotland again, I had such a great time working with them all. We’ll let you know how it all goes, once the adrenalin and nerves have settled. Tania  Whilst we are all nervous there is also a sense of excitement among the team today. This event is such a great opportunity and we are all really looking forward to meeting everybody and showing them our work.

Showcasing Event

Posted by in Education & Outreach, Events

As part of our Skills for the Future programme, we have been working on developing a showcasing event at Edinburgh Castle. The idea is to demonstrate the skills and experience we’ve gained over the five months that we’ve been working with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland. Our audience is going to be a number of representatives from heritage organisations, who could potentially be our future employers! I’m really looking forward to meeting people from the National Galleries of Scotland, as I thoroughly enjoyed my…read more
